Insider tips from a local host who knows how to make every Gulf Coast getaway memorable.

As a long-time host and lover of all things coastal, fall is one of my favorite times of year to welcome families to the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The summer crowds thin out, the breeze turns crisp (but not too cool!), and the whole area transforms into a relaxing, kid-friendly escape full of outdoor adventures, festivals, and unforgettable sunsets.

Whether you’re traveling with toddlers or teens, here’s my personal guide to family fun on the Mississippi Gulf Coast during the fall months.

🍁 1. Take Advantage of Cooler Beach Days

Fall is still beach season here. The temps stay in the 70s and 80s well into October, which means you can enjoy the sand without the scorching sun. Build sandcastles in Long Beach, fly a kite in Gulfport, or enjoy a quieter stretch of shore in Pass Christian — and don’t forget the sunsets! Pack a picnic and make a memory.

🎃 2. Visit Local Fall Festivals & Markets

The Coast comes alive with festive events in the fall. Some favorites that families love include:

  • Cruisin’ the Coast (early October) – A classic car lover’s dream with fun for all ages.

  • Long Beach Farmers Market – Local goodies, crafts, and snacks every Saturday.

  • Fall Festival at the Mississippi Aquarium – Seasonal fun with marine life and hands-on exhibits.

🐬 3. Hit the Water Without the Heat

From dolphin cruises in Biloxi to kayak rentals in Bay St. Louis, fall is the perfect time to explore the Gulf and bayous. The cooler temps make it easier for little ones to enjoy a day on the water. Try a boat tour or join a coastal ecology adventure for hands-on learning.

🐊 4. Educational Adventures with a Side of Fun

The Mississippi Gulf Coast is packed with interactive learning experiences that kids don’t even realize are educational:

  • Lynn Meadows Discovery Center – A nationally recognized children’s museum in Gulfport.

  • The Institute for Marine Mammal Studies – Meet sea lions, touch stingrays, and learn about ocean life.

  • INFINITY Science Center – NASA exhibits and STEM fun just a short drive away.
